4 Easy Steps

#1 :  Find a Mover or Do It Yourself?

* Full-Service Movers do the heavy work so you don't have to!  They typically pack your possessions into boxes and crates, load the moving truck, drive your belongings to your new home and unpack them for you.  They can also provide temporary storage in the event you are delayed getting into your new home and carry insurance to cover any of those '"whoops, I dropped it!" damages.  Extras would include, boxes to put your things into and packing material.

*  Self Move... If you have 'person power' and a truck (or can rent a truck cheaply), moving yourself may be a good idea!  Make sure you have enough man power with staying power to handle the job.  Moving is a hard task and should be approached with a solid plan of action.

#2 :  The 3 P's of Moving!

*  Pack: Well before moving day arrives, pack up everything but the bare essentials.  Pack well so nothing breaks.  Pace yourself; this is a big job. Give yourself time to pack and organize as best you can to make it easier to unpack at your new home.  Make a plan, get lots of boxes and packing material.

*  People: Line up as many people as you can.  The more you have the faster it goes.  Even so, make sure you match each person with a certain task and/or be the 'foreman' delegating tasks.

*  Power: Make sure the truck is big enough for the job and the people are strong enough to lift heavy items.  You don't want to 'overload' your friends to the point of hurting them physically.  Make sure someone can actually drive the size of truck you choose.

#3 :   Change Your Address!

*  Check out  www.smartmoves.ca/eng/section1/postal.htm for 10 steps to completing Canada's Post's "postal redirection form."

#4 :  Don't Forget to Set Up Your Utilities!

*  Even if you're just moving down the block, you're effectively startin a new account when you change homes.  It's a great time to review your options and find out about different payment plans and alternatives.  Don't forget to look after all of your various untilities.  (Hydro, gas, cable, telephone, internet, etc.)
